American Apparel to Launch Sesame Street T-Shirt Line

October 12, 2009
By Sarah Knapp

American Apparel, Los Angeles, is heading to Sesame Street. The clothing company is collaborating with design studio Mighty Fine to create T-shirts imprinted with the original line drawings of classic Sesame Street characters such as Big Bird, Burt and Ernie.

The limited-edition line is set to launch sometime this month in 25 of American Apparel’s stores, as well as online. The company hopes to further expand to all stores and perhaps to the American Apparel Kids' line. The launch of the design coincides with Sesame Street's 40th anniversary.

The process includes turning the original drawings into line illustrations, which can then be printed on American Apparel T-shirts. According to the company, customers will be able to choose from dozens of color backgrounds.

The selection of the prints was a two-month process as designers searched through eight discs of Sesame Street’s graphic archives to select the four final images. Carolina Crespo, American Apparel graphic designer, said in a statement that “the end result is a cast of characters and images that bring a modern feel to Sesame Street and a heritage to American Apparel.”
