Tech Tips Embroidery: Thread-Saving Secrets

Feb 1, 2009

While embroidery thread won't spoil the way food items do, some types do have a shelf life. Just how long will it keep? There's no set number of years thread will last, but different types do outlast others, according to manufacturers. For instance, polyester thread virtually will last forever under the right conditions. But rayon, which is constructed from natural wood products, will likely deteriorate more quickly, experts say.

The following pointers will help extend your thread's shelf life:

• Keep it out of direct sunlight.

• Store thread in a covered container or use a plastic drop cloth to cover the thread cones if they are hanging on a wall. Dust weakens thread.

• Never use old tape to hold a loose end of thread to the cone. The tape's adhesive will sink into the thread and can cause breaks.

• Keep your shop at a constant temperature. Sudden changes cause "sweat" and prolonged dampness weakens the thread.
