American Apparel Supports Cleaner Cotton CampaignOct 1, 2008
Sustainable Cotton Project, a non-profit organization based in California's Central Valley, launched the Cleaner Cotton Campaign to help local farmers reduce chemical use during cotton farming without using genetically modified cottonseeds. According to Mark Smalley, marketing product manager, American Apparel, the company entered into a partnership with Sustainable Cotton Project because it recognizes the benefits of Cleaner Cotton and how it positively impacts the environment. "An average acre of cotton in California takes 4.5 pounds of agricultural chemicals to produce," he says. "Cleaner Cotton takes only 1 pound per acre. [This means] California cotton farmers can harvest a cleaner, more sustainable crop and release far fewer chemicals into the environment than typical cotton growers." Sustainable Cotton Project also has created Biological Agricultural Systems in Cotton (BASIC) to educate local farmers and encourage these unique practices. American Apparel offers a line of sustainable products, made from 100% organic cotton sourced from California's Central Valley. The line, which was shown at this year's Imprinted Sportswear Show (ISS) in Atlanta, held Sept. 11-13, ranges from T-shirts to briefs in adult and children's styles. Cleaner Cotton will be incorporated into the company's sustainable line, Smalley says.
