London Rocks New Line of Shirts and MugsAug 5, 2009
The London Underground is getting the rock star treatment via a new line of merchandise promoting London and its famous Tube. EMI Music Publishing and Transport for London have partnered to create a line of mugs and T-shirts, which feature lyrics from songs about the city. EMI songwriters like Peter Doherty, Eddy Grant and Sir John Johns (a.k.a. Andy Partridge) are among the artists whose lyrics will be used. Songs include Grant’s “Electric Avenue,” Doherty’s “Albion” and “Itchycoo Park” by Steve Marriot and Ronnie Lane. Each item also notes the closest tube stop to the location mentioned in the song. “London Underground is a major part of life in the capital and as such the Tube has been featured in many song lyrics,” said Transport for London brand manager Saskia Boersma, in a statement. The merchandise is designed by London-based agency 1977 Design, which created two separate sets of T-shirts and mugs. One uses the well-known London Underground typography. The featured song as well as its genre and era inspire the other line of merchandise. (“Electric Avenue” gets a neon blue ’80s style, while “Itchycoo Park” is pink and light green with a scrolling type that evokes the ’60s). “London and music are inextricably linked, and a huge number of songwriters across all genres and time periods have been inspired by our capital city,” said EMI Music Publishing UK vice president of sales Melanie Johnson, in a statement. “We are thrilled to become the first music company to work with Transport for London, and to link the music of our writers with music fans.” — Nielsen Business Media RECENT INDUSTRY NEWS HEADLINES
