New Specialty Platens Allow Printing on Oblong ItemsJan 10, 2008
Skateboards and miscellaneous substrate printing are providing numerous opportunities for decorators, according to Fernando Padilla Jr., president of the Paramount, Calif.-based company. "Textile, woods, leather, novelty bricks, sand dollars (and most absorbent materials) prove that growth and expansion can be achievable by thinking outside the decorated apparel box," he says. Padilla also points to distressed techniques via direct-to-garment printing software and T-shirt photo prints as up-and-coming trends. Brother customers Dustin and Lisa Henderson started their mobile decorating business Big Fish Ink, Yachats, Ore., with the mindset of creating lasting memories on apparel, notes Padilla. The pair creates on-site photo prints with their GT-541 while traveling to various events around Oregon. The Hendersons experiment printing on an assortment of substrates, and one of their most popular products are sand dollars with scenes printed on them. — H.S. RECENT INDUSTRY NEWS HEADLINES
