Gildan Announces Chari-T Design Contest Winner

September 02, 2010

Gildan Activewear, St. Michael, Barbados, recently announced the winner of its 5-5-5 Chari-T Design contest: “Rooted in Hope,” submitted by Kristen Redfearn of Marketing Communications Inc., Thomasville, Ga.

Gildan’s contest was two-pronged and also involved the company’s “I Support…” initiative, which was launched in January 2010 to support charities across the country who are struggling in these challenging economic times to maintain revenues necessary to continue operations. An ongoing initiative, participants share their stories on which charities they support at genuinegildan.com.

The 5-5-5 Chari-T Design contest challenged participants to design a T-shirt in five days that would demonstrate the spirit behind charitable involvement as expressed through the many stories submitted to the “I Support…” program.

A panel of judges comprising industry leaders chose Redfearn’s design from many submissions and collectively felt that it best captured the motivation behind charitable involvement in the apparel industry, as well as being a design that is universally appealing, according to the company.

“[The design] is a very modern design that requires you to work a little to understand the meaning,” says Sandra Miniutti, a contest judge and vice president of marketing and CFO, Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator.

“The contest was a new endeavor for us,” says Garry Bell, vice president of marketing, Gildan Activewear. “We are extremely pleased by the interest and participation. We asked designers to visually illustrate the spirit behind our ongoing ‘I Support…’ program in a very compressed timeframe and they rose to the challenge.”

Through the “I Support…” program, Gildan will award up to $100,000 to a selected charity in January 2011 and help create awareness of the importance of charitable donations and volunteerism within the apparel industry.

In addition to receiving $5,000 in Gildan product, Redfearn’s winning design wil be used when Gildan and M&R team to attempt a new world record for shirts printed in an hour by a single operator. The contest, called the “M&R World Record Challenge,” will be held Oct. 1 at the Imprinted Sportswear Show (ISS) in Fort Worth, Texas.

Nine additional designs from the Top 10 finalists were selected in the 5-5-5 Chari-T Design contest via public voting. Each of these designers will receive $500 in Gildan product and have their designs featured on signage and in Gildan’s booth at the ISS show.
