Gildan Breaks Guinness World Record for Largest T-Shirt

June 17, 2011

Gildan Activewear, St. Michael, Barbados, broke The Guinness World Record for the largest T-shirt on June 11 during the Country Music Association's 40th Music Festival in Nashville, Tenn., according to the company.

The T-shirt — which is nearly the size of a football field — measures about 170 feet wide and 262 feet long, weighs nearly three tons and took six weeks to make. It is so large that the amount of fabric used can create 12,000 shirts. The company plans to donate this amount of T-shirts to Keep the Music Playing (KTMP) — a charity that supports music education.

"We’re excited to not only break the Guinness World Record but also, more importantly, to align with Keep the Music Playing through our donation," says Randy Brown, vice president retail sales for Gildan. "Music education is so important to today’s youth and we’re thrilled to support the cause."

Gildan produced the T-shirt fabric at its state-of-the-art textile facility, with yarn from spinning plants in North Carolina. Final construction took place in Utah over four weeks, using sewing machines on a large track that sewed the rolls of fabric into larger panels for assembly. The record-breaking shirt, which is the same proportions as a regular sized, large T-shirt, was then set onto a flatbed trailer to make the 1,700-mile trip to Nashville. It was rolled out at Centennial Park by more than 100 volunteers, with a Guinness representative on hand to oversee the unveiling.

The record-breaking shirt was unveiled with the help of 19 Recordings/RCA Nashville recording artist Danny Gokey, according to the company.
