Maggie’s Organics Launches Fair Labor-Certified Line

August 06, 2010

The Maggies Organics line of sweatshop-free apparel includes hoodies and pants for women, as well as scarves, wraps tank tops, camisoles, knit dresses and T-shirts for men and women.
Maggie’s Organics, Ypsilanti, Mich., recently introduced a clothing line that is independently certified to a new standard for Fair Labor Practices and Community Benefits.

The company’s line of Fair Labor-certified apparel includes knit dresses, camisoles, tank tops, hoodies, pants for women, scarves and T-shirts for men and women.

Up until now, third-party certification of fair trade or fair labor practices has been available only for commodity products, such as tea, coffee, bananas and other agricultural goods. The certification includes on-site inspection at each step of the complex, multi-stage process of clothing manufacturing, according to the company.

Consumers have responded enthusiastically, says Bena Burda, founder and CEO, Maggie’s Organics. “People love the idea of a quality product that feels good when you put it on — and is made in a way that respects the environment and also sustains workers at every stage of the production process.”

The certification was issued by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). Criteria investigated by the organization included hiring, wages, working conditions, hours of work, freedom of association, freedom to organize and access to housing, health care and transportation.

Every stage — from the growing of organic cotton and spinning the crop into fabric in Nicaragua, to cutting and sewing in Costa Rica, to screen printing, office and warehouse operations in Michigan, was inspected.
